Our Planet Is Dying

I consider myself quite an ecofriendly person as many others do and yet recently I completed an online ecological footprint questionaire and was shocked. If everyone lived the way I did we would need 2.1 Earths. Double what we have now! Thats not the worst of it, some people needed 3 and 4 Earths! Furthermore, with the recent news that The Great Barrier Reef is quite literally ‘dying’ due to coral bleaching, I have decided to become more outspoken regarding the topic of climate change. I am not aiming to attack anyone, instead provide factual information that leads you to make lifestyle changes to save our planet.

How are we ever going to be able to support the lifestyle we lead now in the future? We won’t if we continue on the path we are now.

We caused this. We have caused entire species to become extinct and million year old forests to be bulldozed. Some would say “my actions don’t matter” but the saying is true; one person can make a change, so make that one person you.

For people that don’t believe in climate change, wake up. It is clear that this is not part of the natural variation in the Earths climate over the past billions of years. The ozone hole is getting larger and the amount of greenhouse gases trapped in our atmosphere continues to rise with detrimental effects. Never has their ever been a time in the Earths history that such a catastrophic event has truly threatened the future of our planet and its people.

Graph showing the level of CO2 in the atmosphere

  • Temperatures will continue to rise.

  • Frost free season will lengthen.

  • Further changes in precipitation patterns.

  • More droughts and heat waves.

  • Cyclones/Hurricanes will become stronger and more intense.

  • Sea level will rise.

  • Artic Ocean is expected to become ice free in Summer before the mid-century.

These effects are clearly not good things. Millions of people will migrate, wars will begin, people will starve and our planet will die – alongside all the species it is home to.

So you’ve read all that and are wondering “what can I do”?

EDUCATION IS POWER. Research climate change yourself, listen to others and lead by example. Be the change you wish to see in the world. Keep an eye out for more of my future posts regarding specifically what you can do to save the planet.

  1. Have you watched Cowspiracy yet? Animal agriculture is one of the biggest contributors to climate change as you may already know. Changing our diets is one of the most powerful things we can do to save the planet. Eat more plants!
